Professional Development Workshop for Artists & Art Teachers July 6 – 10, 2015

Course Code:  EDU 5515 C15 – this workshop may be taken for 3 credits!

Learn to draw and paint using Epson’s large touch-screen BrightLink 595Wi Interactive Projector* integrated with the iMac software ArtRage and Adobe After Effects.  Compliment STEM competencies by mastering basic skills and techniques to develop your own unique artistic vision and incorporate these into your classroom, and refine your critical abilities through group discussion and evaluation.

This workshop may be taken for graduate, undergraduate, or professional development credit.  Participants will need to bring a tablet (iPad 2 or Android) to the workshop loaded with ArtRage App ($4.99 to download – see http://www.artrage.com).  Each participant will have the use of an Epson BrightLink Projector and an iMac with Wacom tablet.  Other software available for use includes Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, Adobe Flash, & Processing,  Seating is limited to 5 participants, so register early!

This professional development workshop is being offered in collaboration between “Castleton State College Center for Schools” and the Center for Digital Art (Michel Moyse).

Dates: July 6 – July 10, 2015.

Class Time:  Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 4:30 pm.

Credit: 3 credits: This workshop may be taken for graduate, undergraduate, or professional development credits.

Fee: $850.00 if you do not want to take this course for credit.  Add $345.00 (i.e. total of $1,195.00) if you want 3 credits.

Course Objectives:

  1. Review current artistic practices in digital and video art
  2. Learn basic skills and techniques to create art with iPad or Android app “ArtRage”
  3. Learn basic skills and techniques to create art in duration using Adobe After Effects CS5.5
  4. Create 4 interim projects and a final project for class review and presentation
Concepts and Tools/Software to Learn/Explore:
  1. Learn basic concepts in working with still and motion image resolutions, pixels, aspect ratios and frame rates
  2. Learn basic skills and techniques to create artwork using the Epson BrightLink Projector
  3. Learn basic skills and techniques to draw & paint with Adobe After Effects CS 5.5
  4. Explore additional software on iMac (Quicktime, Photoshop, Flash, Processing) to integrate into your artistic practice
  5. Explore educational applications to integrate concepts, skills, and tools into your classroom
Course Projects:
  1. Four Interim Projects:
    1. Draw & paint using the Epson Touch-Screen Projector and the iPad & iMac App “ArtRage”
    2. Create a single channel artwork in After Effects incorporating found or recorded still/video and audio footage
    3. Create a multi-channel artwork in After Effects incorporating found or recorded still/video and audio footage
    4. Create a two to five minute single or multi-channel final project demonstrating competency with concepts & skills learned in the workshop.

     

    *I’ve always found it difficult to draw and paint on a small computer screen.  I used to do a lot of painting with oils on canvasses that often measured 8 ft x 8 ft or more, but I found myself hindered by the fundamental inability to use bodily gesture when I transitioned to computers.   Work on a Wacom tablet or even a 21 inch Cintiq does not allow for gestural engagement in any significant way.  However, the development of the large format Interactive projector now makes it possible to work up to a 100 inch diagonal.  Not only this, but the work can be done (and viewed) in broad daylight.   These are important developments!  For me, this means gesture (and therefore sense), can be more properly integrated into the creative process, and the fact that it can be seen in nearly broad daylight places the work in the “painting” rather than “videoart” or “film” category  – i.e. as something (painting) that transforms light into matter, rather than something (film) that transforms matter into light.

About Michel Moyse:

Michel Moyse, artist, filmmaker and teacher, is Artistic Director and Co-Founder of the Center for Digital Art in Brattleboro, Vermont. Michel has an extensive background in film and experimental art. His multi-screen video artwork has been shown in the United States and abroad. Prior to his position as Artistic Director of CDA, Michel was Sound Editor in New York City for such directors as Woody Allen, Brian De Palma, Jonathan Demme, and Peter Yates. Michel has a Masters in Art Education from New York University. After working for many years with oils, canvas, plastic and glass, Michel’s work took a decisive turn towards what he now calls ‘motionpainting’ in the mid 1980s with the advent of computers and digital technologies. The result is a series of digital artwork that explode the concept of traditional two-dimensional art through the addition of motion, sound and narrative elements. Michel lives and works in Brattleboro, Vermont.
