On May 24th, CDA will host By Any Means Necessary, a special exhibition of music videos created by local experimental/DIY artists. The featured musicians in this video installation will be performing inside CDA’s studio and in Sobo Studio, our next-door neighbor. Among them are Burlington-based artist Joey Pizza Slice, Maine-born performance artist IDM Theftable and the Brattleboro-based “pretend pop” bands Blanche Blanche Blanche and Great Valley. Also joining the line-up is Boston experimental punk-rock group Guerilla Toss, and Fat Worm of Error, an avant-garde experimental rock group from Western Massachusetts.

Opening reception begins at 6PM. Performances will begin at 6:30 and continue until 11PM. Admission is by donation. Studio and building are wheelchair accessible.

Shot earlier this year in and around Brattleboro, the video for Great Valley’s “Bleacher Honey” (off of their third full-length LP Continental Lunch) boasts a playful experimental style combining vintage analogue video-mixing effects with digital editing.

Joey Pizza Slice used a VHS channel mixer to create the special effects in the video for “Fat City”

The Rube Goldberg Effect is the final project from the 2008 Advanced Filmmaking Class at CDA, it tells the story of two high school friends who race against time to finish a Rube Goldberg Machine for a science project. But just like those ridiculous contraptions for which the film is named (think marble rolling down a ramp, knocking over a row of dominoes which sets off a catapult, which spills a beaker of water, etc) cause and effect set off a hilarious chain of events which prolong the girls from achieving one very simple task: buying the last piece of their project at the hardware store.
